In the 1950s, about 1 million Kikuyu people in Africa were put into concentration camps by the British. In this short clip, author and reporter George Monbiot discusses the torturous methods the British used, including rape, maiming, murder, etc. Monbiot condemns colonialism, its horrors, and the racist ideas used to justify it, namely that all African people were ruthless, pagan, violent, savages who needed to be civilized. He points out that many of his white counterparts would minimize the atrocious history of colonialism, by essentially saying, “Yes that was bad, but look at all the good that came of it.” But what good came of it? Extreme comfort for white people while systems of oppression and exploitation funnel the material wealth of Africa to their countries? The current situation is a continuation of colonization and exploitation. But will you learn about this in school? Do you learn about King Leopold II’s enslavement of the Congolese, leading to over 10 million deaths? No.

The legacy of racial desolation carried out by and continued by oppressive imperial and colonial powers requires a race specific response. We are oppressed, massacred, and painted as uncivilized because we are Black, in order to maintain white comfort created through Black exploitation. We must unite under the banner of Black Nationalism and Pan Africanism to create counterbalancing power to hold the evil machinations of white powers at bay.
